Cod liver oil - the name says it all really, it comes from the liver of the cod fish. Its a nutrient dense source of omega-3s, vitamin A and It is also one of the richest food sources of vitamin D. Most often its added to the diet in supplement form (oil or capsules). It has many impressive benefits that have been studied over the years. I have listed what I believe are the top 5 benefits below.
- Cod liver oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Omega-3’s have natural anti-inflammatory properties and there have been many studies done on the positive effects they have on by suppressing the proteins that cause chronic inflammation in the body. The Vitamin A and D found in cod liver oil plays an important role in reducing oxidative stress which leads to inflammation in our bodies.

- Cod liver oil can be used as a natural remedy for mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Studies show it to have the greatest effect on people who are already taking antidepressant medications. The omega-3 fatty acids found in cod liver oil (EPA and DHA) are critical for normal brain function during all stages of life including babies. Omega-3’s have been linked to higher intelligence and lower risk of behavioural problems in child development along with reducing the risk of several diseases including diabetes. (but make sure if you are giving your baby/child a fish oil supplement - that it’s the correct approved one for their age group) Low levels of EPA and DHA have been linked to accelerated brain ageing and defects in brain function in adults.

- Cod liver oil is one of the most popular supplements when it comes to joint health, especially with those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. whilst there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, thanks to the anti inflammatory properties of cod liver oil it can helps to relieve symptoms of joint swelling and tenderness.

- Cod liver oil helps prevent heart disease. Studies have shown cod liver oil to help lower high triglycerides which is a type of dangerous fat found in our blood that increases the risk of heart disease. It also helps increase levels of good cholesterol and lower high blood pressure. Supplementing with cod liver oil will help keep your heart healthy and help to lower your risk of heart attacks and strokes.

- Cod liver oil is an excellent source of vitamin A and D. Vitamin A is an important fat soluble vitamin that ‘keeps the peace’ by mediating the relationship between gut bacteria and our immune system. It also acts as an antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress in our bodies. Vitamin A’s most well known benefit is it’s importance to eye health and along with improving our eyesight it can even help with preventing macular degeneration and glaucoma. Cod liver oil is one of the best food sources of vitamin D. It plays a crucial role in keeping our bones healthy by regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Becoming deficient in vitamin D can increase your susceptibility to illness. Like vitamin A, vitamin D also modulates our immune systems response, and can help reduces the risk of respiratory infection.

Note * Cod liver oil should not be take during pregnancy and breast feeding due to it’s high levels of vitamin A. You can take approved pre and post natal approved fish oils though.
