Weekly Tip - Antioxidants
I thought as i always mention the benefit of antioxidants I should share what they actually are and why they are important.
What are they?
The definition of an antioxidant is ‘a substance that inhibits oxidation’. Ive mentioned in past blog post that oxidation is the route cause of most chronic illnesses so it is definitely something we want to stop or slow down. Oxidation or oxidative stress is caused by free radicals in our body. Antioxidants tackle the damage done by free radicals by donating an electron to them, this calms the free radical down and stops it stealing from another cell in the body
We can get antioxidants from the food we eat. Eating a wide variety of fruit and vegetables is the best way to ensure a good balance of antioxidants. If our diet is not nutritious enough our antioxidant levels will be low and this is when free radicals will start to cause damage to our cells.
